What do you look for in an engine to determine the quality?

-I know about the cylinders, youll hear a 4 liter v8 and stuff like that or maybe 10000 cc's but what all does this mean, and when determining the quality of an engline what do you look for. Treat me like a new born baby, i know nothing. thanks.
