What makes a Catalytic Converter illegal in California?
-What is it that makes it illegal here in this Liberal state. I want to buy Magnaflow high flow cat, but california is the only state that doens't let you buy one. Any help please?In california any aftermarket part that is not to OEM Spec must get tested by and approved by the California Air Resource Board. And will have a CARB # that you need to display under your hood so smog techs don't fail you on visual. Its not that it is illegal, just not approved. It is an expensive process and one most aftermarket parts makers choose to bypass.
One way to get around it is to find another car that has a stock higher flowing cat (most sports cars) order one of those, and adapt it to yours. It will look OEM and no tech should be able to tell.

Wheel spacers choice?
-I own a 97' Geo Tracker 4x4 two door with 15 inch, 5 lugnut rims.
I'm looking into getting some spacers so that it handles better on the road and to improve the overall looks.

-So I ran out of gas, dummy me, and my gas can has gas in it that is probably 1-2 years old. Is it okay to use it? I need to keep cargo in place inside of our work van and saw this. Anyone know what it's called?
-It was a set of steel bars, with an adjustable bar in the center that went from one side of the van to the other. It worked kind of like the bar you put in a doorway to do pullups on, only much bigger and stronger. It kept the cargo from sliding forward. I saw it inside of a delivery van, but the driver didn't know what it was called. Anyone know the correct name for this so I can search for it online? -I'm currently interested in purchasing my first portable vehicle GPS Navigation system. That being said, I am looking at the Garmin Nuvii 1450LMT model with Free traffice and map updates.

Now is this overall, a decent navigator system or did I not research better? Also, it said that there's a FM traffic receiver with power cable included in the box. What happens if i drive a pa car in nj with a nj permit?
-i live in NJ and have a NJ learners permit. my mom lives in PA and comes to visit me. her car has PA plates and i was wonder if i can legally drive that car if the person in the passenger seat has a NJ licence. I'll drive my moms car in NJ.permits are only valid in the state in which they are issued. if you get pulled over in another state driving with a permit other than the state in which you are pulled over, you will be classified as driving without a license. high five!!!

I parked in front of a dropped kerb which is no longer in use?
-the dropped kerb was used to enter and leave a driveway, the home owners have erected a fence and planted bushes there as they have moved their dropped kerb further along. How do you light a license plate lamp with batteries? (PLEASE SEE DETAILS BEFORE ANSWERING))?
-A license plate lamp has only one wire. I am trying to figure out how to get it to light up using one small battery, no larger than one of those big flashlight batteries. Is it possible? If so, how? if you use a 12v dry bat, the bulbs will be compatible. mount bat in trunk. add more bats in parallel for brightness.
we did the same thing with a single running light to meet the drag strip regs. but we had all the wires. so you have to swap yours out.

The aftermath of my car accident?
-Yesterday I got into a fender-bender with a motorcycle right downtown in front of all the fast food restaurants in my town, so it was pretty public. After we got everything settled, my friend had texted me saying that the pom girls who work at McDonald's told the whole pom team that I hit a motorcycle. I was just instantly upset. They weren't concerned about me or the bikers well being they just wanted new gossip to tell the team. The accident happened right in front of McDonald's so I'm sure everyone, including the works were gawking.
I'm just so mad at myself and these girls. I know I should just get over it, but I want to go through the drive through again and just throw my change at them.

PLEASE HELP. What job in other fields can a 50 year old truck driver get?
-My dad has been doing this for 20 years, and what most of you may not know is that it's a really tough job. It tests patience, and you health aswell. The job is very unfair, and if calculated, as a company driver, runs to New Jersey and surrounding parts of America get my father less than minimum wage. It's very fustrating to know that 5 days of the week you'll be in a truck, sleepless, and on top of this, $400 dollars are being cut from the paycheck to pay taxes. We have tried so many other trucking companies, and things always have a way of falling apart. I am very concerned with my fathers health and sanity. Unlike many men his age he looks young, is in very good shape, and is very capable. I want to help him find a way so he can get rid of this stress, be healthy, and happy. I am looking for jobs that would be able to support 3 people comfortably. Being only 16, I am unaware of all the possibilities that are out there. -I am moving to Texas in exactly 2 weeks and I need to get my permit but I saw that people between the ages of 18 and 24 have to take an drivers ed course. I found out I can take online. So I would like to do that before I get there because it would be easier because I wont have internet when I get there and I wont have a ride to get to a class room course. I went past him on the highway, he was going too slow! He got behind me and pulled me over. I was so scared, he was mean at first but once he figured out I was a ditz he was cool. Has anyone ever paid for an all day pass for Metro and when security checked it, it was empty?
-I was going to take a ride somewhere out in LA for an errand. Paid my 6.00 fee for the all day pass security scanned it and the little scanner denied my card! So now i have a ticket to pay for when in reality i paid fare for. So now im trying to get a similar story to mine so i can prove that what happened to me is possible. I think it was either the little scanner or maybe the driver didn't scan my card right, and i kept on my way. When security checked it showed me guilty!! Has this ever happened to anyone?

For a few weeks every morning when i pull off in the mornings first thing, it runs like its cold, each gear takes a few seconds to get full power, putting foot on throttle but not getting potential until it has "warmed up" then off we go.
I was scooting through the rush hour traffic just now, no probs, hit the motor way, tried to get going off the slip road and changed to 5th and no power, dropped back to 4th but once we got to 2 and half thousand revs, no power, no more revs, couldnt go no harder than 65mph.
Came off next exit, ended up driving the rest of the 5 mile journey 30 mph, not exceeding 2 and half thousand revs. Once in a safe place close to home i tested it as i could feel resistance of speed all the way home. I popped it into 3rd and put foot to floor, couldnt get harder than 30mph. Checked bat connection, and for anything else obvious before pulling into local garage. he said without warning light or putting through computer, couldnt possibly tell the problem , to busy to book in. So any ideas anyone ??? could dirty filters, injector heads cause this as its due a major service???sounds like your transmission is not engaging or like your clutch is worn and slipping.

-I have a half a tank of gas and I know my trip there and back is 50 miles. I was wondering if there was some calculator online or some way for me to figure out if it will last me, or how long it will last me before I will have to fill it. I'm sure I could figure it out with calculations, but I'm not that good at math.Any car should make a 50 mile trip on 1/2 tank of gas. You need to figure out what kind of gas mileage you are getting. You do this by filling the tank and writing the mileage down, driving until you get to almost empty and filling it again. Divide the miles by the gallons you added. Do this 3 times and average them(add together and divide by 3, this gives you an average Miles per gallon), This does 2 things. Gives you the MPG for the car and lets you know how far you can travel on a tank of gas.

Driving a manual can be fun once you get used to the car. Remember, when you apply the gas, SLOWLY let out the clutch, do NOT let the clutch out quickly when you are first starting, as you have learned you will stall the engine when doing that. As you SLOWLY let the clutch out you can feel the gear start to 'catch' and the car will start to move.
Just relax, don't worry about blowing up the engine or stalling the engine. Put it into 1st gear, press the gas pedal gently and SLOWLY begin to let the clutch out. The more you let the clutch out, you should add more gas, it is not a big thing, very easy. Once you get used to it you'll be slamming gears quickly.
Stalling is caused by one thing (assuming you are in 1st gear): letting up the clutch too fast. My sons both did that when I first taught them to drive a standard, they would start letting it up slowly until the car started to move a little, then dump the clutch and the car would stall. You need to let it up slowly and apply a little gas as it starts to engage. Be patient and you'll get better with time.

Im still learning but that definitely helped me. good luck!

HELP! I failed my driving test three times in CA, and I'm 16 ?
-I just got home from my third attempt at my driving test, which I failed. :'( Honestly, I'm not a bad driver at all. The first test I failed because I didn't look at my blind spot when merging into a bike lane to turn right, the second I didn't turn on my wipers when it was (BARELY) sprinkling, and now I tried to go around a big truck that had it's hazards on, I checked my blind spot and then ZOOM this big SUV comes outta nowhere, speeding around the corner, to pass me. -_____-"

Parking out of control?
-I have lived on my street for 20 years. Back then, you could walk down the street and not see a car parked on the curb. Now, with rentals maxed out, kids living at home until 30, and home-based businesses, it's like parking wars. Is this a new trend, and will it reverse, or is this the way it is? -because of labor unions. the only thing American car companies know how to build right are pickup trucks, everything else is sub-par and severely outdated. just look at the new Chevy Cruze, it needs a turbocharged 1.6 four-banger just to make 150hp. i have a 15 year-old Honda with the same displacement, it makes the same power through natural aspiration. why the hell does GM waste so much of our money(yes, our money) developing technology that's pure horseshit? why can't they build a small car that can go up to 300,000 miles without needing a replacement engine or transmission? i wish i knew, but i don't. and WHY CAN'T AMERICAN CAR COMPANIES BUILD A CAR WITH PROPER REAR INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION!?!?!?!?!

Car Stopped Hazards On, Accident Behind Is it my fault?

My mothers car broke down on the side of the road. She got as far over as she could and put her hazards on. Then after being there for an hour and no problems a car breaks abruptly and the car behind that car hits it. They are trying to blame it on my mom, but it's not her fault because she was stopped with her hazards on and was doing everything she could legally do when her car has broken down. It's the other persons fault because they weren't paying attention to there surroundings right? When I was in an accident a year ago because a person was breaking abruptly I was still the one who got in trouble because the judge said I wasn't paying attention to my surroundings. Like I said serious answers only. I am just looking for outsider feedback on the situation.

It's not the car, it's the driver. I have lived in snow country most of my life, from the midwest USA to the pacific northwest to Alaska and have owned mostly rear-wheel drive cars. There is no magic formula to winter driving. You just make sure your car is equipped with a good set of winter tires, and SLOW DOWN!
You cannot drive on snow and ice at the same speeds you drive on bare pavement, and expect to survive.
The trick is to select second gear and slowly lift the clutch until you feel the bite then gentle acceleration until you get the grip. Alternativly you can place weight in the boot to give you grip.
Snow tyres is the only way, they make a huge difference in traction when in snow.
Carry a couple of bags of sand in the boot if you can't afford snow tyres.
There is no real way.

It's not the car, it's the driver. I have lived in snow country most of my life, from the midwest USA to the pacific northwest to Alaska and have owned mostly rear-wheel drive cars. There is no magic formula to winter driving. You just make sure your car is equipped with a good set of winter tires, and SLOW DOWN!
You cannot drive on snow and ice at the same speeds you drive on bare pavement, and expect to survive.
The trick is to select second gear and slowly lift the clutch until you feel the bite then gentle acceleration until you get the grip. Alternativly you can place weight in the boot to give you grip.
Snow tyres is the only way, they make a huge difference in traction when in snow.
Carry a couple of bags of sand in the boot if you can't afford snow tyres.
There is no real way.
4WD you really need pal.
At worst, front wheel drive.

What causes high HC and CO during smog check?
-my car failed with both twice as high as the max allowed. i read that it could be because of a rich fuel condition but what can i do to fix it? new o2 sensor? Before i took it to smog i had changed the oil, spark plugs, spark plug wires, pcv valve, and poured into the gas tank a fuel injector cleaner. The car also seemed to be running good. What could cause the problem? its a 97 camry 2.2 liter
Why is my license being suspended?
-I received my first ticket on Easter of 2011, this ticket was for failure to yield right of way. Suppose i pulled out in front of him on his motorcycle almost causing him to wreck, he had his blinker on turning onto the road i was on. Well, instead of going through court and stuff. I plead no contest on the ticket and paid it on time in person. I got a letter on July 6, 2011 saying my license is going to be suspended for 60 days for 4 or more points on my license. Can they do this? Techniques on having confidence while learning to drive?
-I just got my permit July 8th and my parents make me drive everywhere now. I get really nervous when driving with three other drivers in the car(mom,dad,sister) my dad makes me even more nervous when he raises his voice. I end up in tears(from fear, anxiety,feeling of failure) after every time I drive. I know it will just take time, but does anyone have techniques or tips on how to be less anxious and scared? They haven't had enough experience themselves to be teaching someone else. 20+ should be ok, but the older, the better until you start getting into the 60-year-olds. For some reason, they can never drive, no matter how long they've been doing it.

I just bought a Government seized 1999 Ford F150 4x4 in Georgia, then moved to Florida (much more expensive here).
14mpg on the highway with a Triton 5.4L V8, but pulls every load I put in it and behind in a trailer.
$1000 worth of parts and labor to make it pass emissions, due to 3 bad ignition coils out of 8 causing misfires and emissions tests failing. $200 for tag and title, $600 per year in Full Coverage insurance with Geico, then insurance rates doubled for the Florida move so I dropped it to liability only.
With gas prices for regular hovering between $3.48 to $4 per gallon here, fill ups are between $70 to $85 for this model truck, or about 20 gallons.
The older ones are problematic. The Spare Tire Lift winch was jammed on this one and had to be cut out just to get the spare tire down. $145 for a replacement unit, they can't be rebuilt when the cable jams. Another $65 for the power window motor that failed on the driver's side, not to mention power door actuators that failed at $45 apiece. What else, oh the Air Bag key switch in the dash to disable/enable the passenger side Air Bag. It breaks often leaving the warning light on the airbag illuminated on the dash, and disabled. I haven't figured out how to get it out yet without removing the entire dash to change one key switch.
These are not user friendly trucks, even changing the oil. 6 months later and one oil change I did myself, I still haven't found the oil filter anywhere on the engine. I'm sure it has one, maybe they hid it in the gas tank?
Trucks are expensive on gasoline. Since the cost of gasoline is extreme the past year, I'd get something that would save on gas cost and try a truck at a later time. I have a 350 V8 Chevy pickup and cost me twice as much to go anywhere compared to my car. Hence, I only use it for hauling stuff that isn't easily done in a car.
Also they are terrible or dangerous on snow or ice.
One thing to consider... if the cost of gasoline really goes up higher the value of your truck will hit rock bottom.

I was proper s***--==g myself and when we set off I randomly just started talking. we had a nice conversation whilst taking the test which totally put me at ease, therefore I was calm from the outset. and before I knew it we were done I only got 1 minor and was amazed.
Take a deep breath before setting off, and dont think too much about making a mistake cos it's likely you will make one

Flymo mv100 not working?
-Today however I changed a split fuel pipe after this it worked fine however after 5 mins is started being noisy so I shut it down. It stopped dead and appeared to be seized couldnt pull or turn the blade. Italso appeared hotter than usual. After 2 mins and a wee fiddle everything started to work. But then this repeated few times. Any ideas or advice could it be not enough oil in the fuel mixture ???

For a start it will not damage for car as a once off. It just means it might feel a little less power. If it is recommended to run on premium. i.e it might run 200hp on premium if you put regular in it. Maybe 190hp in a lesser tune. The ECU computer knows what fuel your running and will adjust to it. In Japan all fuel is 100octane thats why you see cars exported will less power than their domestic cars. The had to detune them to suit lower grades of fuel available in other countries.
You're dad is probably mad about something else --- he obviously wants to hurt you, make you feel bad.
Maybe his goal is to "make it bad" --- SO --- he can "make it better."
Make you tear-up, cry---and say that you're sorry --- just so he can, put his arms around you --- and be the hero when he tells you, "It's alright --- I love you more than the stupid car."

I'm a driving instructor and think that yes, this would be a good idea. Some instructors might not be too pleased about this but ignore that can keep up your practice. It's totally understandable that you would like to keep your driving fresh. It'll save you a lot of money too in the long run. As has been stated below already, we all might have a slightly different way of teaching but are all trained to teach the same things, to the same standard, and, if you do anything differently to what one of them would normally teach, then it should be them who adapt to help you... Definitely go for it.

I got a perfect score, only thing I could've done better but wasn't marked was signalling a lane change sooner, to merge onto the highway.

-So the front tires on my car are wearing down pretty bad; that's not the problem. They are Kuhmo AST's, whereas my rear tires are Goodyear Eagle F1 A/S's. I really like how predictable the rear end of my car feels and how the rear tires grip incredibly well; I want the same for the front. I went to Discount Tire in town and got a quote for Goodyear Eagle F1 A/S(same as rear, slightly smaller width).It was about 400 dollars with a warranty and all the little bells and whistles. This was a bit steep, so I thought "hmm well there's a Goodyear store down the street, they'll sell it cheaper". Wrong! It was 100 dollars more!!! Can someone explain how this is possible(from a business standpoint)? I thought cutting down to the supplier is cheaper than getting it from the "middle man".?

What are the steps to getting your permit?
-Like, i would want to know exactly happens, do you go in a room? do they take your phone? do they watch you? I would like to know what exactly happens? Step by step... are there people with you?You go to your local DMV, stand in line (I forgot which line it is) and you fill out your general information, (DOB, height, hair color, if you're a girl or boy, address, eye color, and social security number.) Then you take a photo (be ready, since they person that does it never gives you any warning as to when your photo is being taken, so you may have a chance to smile. You go into another line and you get your number. When your number is called, you go to the counter that your name was called. Keep in mind that this could take hours, and I had to wait about an hour and a half. For the permit test you go to a different room, and you cannot have anything except your number. After getting called, they give you a pencil and your test and you can choose your seat (well, the day I went wasn't crowded) and you desk has a sheet with all the road signs. You take the test and give it back to the person at the counter, and then.... more waiting... this time it was only a half hour. Your NAME gets called and you learn your grade and if you got anything wrong, which questions you got wrong and why it's wrong. After a little more waiting, you get a temporary document that is your permit (the real permit will come in the mail within a few weeks. You leave the DMV and CONGRADULATIONS! YOU CAN NOW HIT THE ROAD!
Why have cars become so complex?
-In the last century, cars were very simple, usually reliable, easy to modify to your tastes, and more connected to the road. Now, it is very hard to find a new car that has a simple mechanical linkage to the throttle, brakes, steering yadayadayada.... I've driven cars that have zero driving aids and a brand new cars that have some stupid facebook status thing. I just don't get it, isn't half the reasons why more crashes happen are because of driver error because they want that new Volvo that can literally stop itself in traffic? Those systems are going to make people not drive as well because of a false sense of security since 80% of people on the road that I encounter are terrible compared to me despite the fact that I only have a permit. And these systems could become mandatory on new cars as soon as 5 years, which will make the initial costs and future maintenance costs go WAY up.
I prefer to drive a simpler car because I have to be more attentive (that'll make me a better driver) and I prefer the feel of a car that's simple, since I usually don't like everything computerized in a car. I also want to modify the car by adding wheels, maybe a new suspension and put a loud *** stereo in it, which if you do to most modern cars, they'll cause the car to become weird and unreliable, not to mention you'll void your new car warranty.
How do you guys feel about this and when I buy a car with my own money in a few years, should I get an older Subaru low-mileage or something?Because people that don't get enjoyment out of driving find that stuff to be a luxury. And because the media tells them to like it.
Not all driving aids are bad, but they should be optional. Things like Antilock brakes, traction control, "accident avoidance", airbags, etc. should all be strictly options, because not everyone wants them. Most of these were designed with good intentions, but then the government stepped in and, as par for the course, screwed things up.
With that said, I haven't found a vehicle I can't fix, with no education in the subject. No matter how many sensors and systems they put on a car, the engine still runs the same way. It still needs fuel, air and a source of ignition. Clutches are clutches (except with twin clutch sequential type gearboxes). Axles are axles. Brakes are brakes.
As for your take on drivers, I completely agree. I live in Colorado, where it does snow somewhat often in the winter, and I drive a mustang. Not just any mustang, a cobra. Sure, it has antilock brakes, but that's about it. No traction control (except my right foot), manual transmission, power steering (but it still has a steering shaft), there's a cable connected from my pedal to my throttle, oh, and did I mention it's a 330+hp V8? And on ultra-high performance tires, not even snow tires? Yet I get around better than people in 4x4 SUVs and cars with snow tires...
I modify my car as well, and honestly there isn't a car out there that you can't modify without some creativity.
Chinese and Japanese engineers determined to take over the world with cheap and inferior products. Plus if the average person can't fix their car because it looks like NASA technology under the hood, then dealers and mechanics can charge you $90 per hour and 300% mark up on parts made in China that fail out of the box or within a few days.
There is more profit in building cars with lots of gizmo's (more to breakdown) and it stops the average DIYer maintaining their own cars. A few years ago I had a good old Ford Cortina and changed the engine/gearbox clutch etc as well maintain the brakes etc with little mechanical knowledge. Castrol GTX was the standard oil for all cars. Now days you need an engineering degree and a whole host of specialised tools just to get to the spark plugs. Even topping up the engine oil has now become complicated because you need to know the exact oil out of thousands of different types available!

Do I need a new muffler tip when installing a new muffler?
-I am going to be putting in a Flowmaster Super 44 in place of my stock muffler, but I need to know if I need to change the muffler tip as well. I don't want the stock tip to interfere with the sound of my new muffler.

Lightbars on civilian vehicles in NC?
-I own a North Carolina film production company, and we want to purchase lightbars for our vehicles. We would use amber colored lightbars and they would be flashing as we drive in convoys to productions, so that someone doesn't get lost. I read the NC general statute that details the laws about lightbars, and I just wanted another opinion on the legality of it. I included the statute below:
North Carolina General Statutes 搂 20-130.2 Use of amber lights on certain vehicles.
All wreckers operated on the highways of the State shall be equipped with an amber鈥慶olored flashing light which shall be so mounted and located as to be clearly visible in all directions from a distance of 500 feet, which light shall be activated when at the scene of an accident or recovery operation and when towing a vehicle which has a total outside width exceeding 96 inches or which exceeds the width of the towing vehicle. It shall be lawful to equip any other vehicle with a similar warning light including, but not by way of limitation, maintenance or construction vehicles or equipment of the Department of Transportation engaged in performing maintenance or construction work on the roads, maintenance or construction vehicles of any person, firm or corporation, Radio Emergency Associated Citizens Team (REACT) vehicles, and any other vehicles required to contain a warning light. For Safety reasons while performing duties while under wrecking contract, or your road maintenance / construction business lic. I remember only being able to use Code 3 lights with the desk Sgt's approval with my old car. Just to say Law enforcement had rules too. See about buying a permit from the local county/ city that you are interested in coordinating this in. Im quite sure governments listen when money is involved... if you plan to invest in this route?

-I am from the west. Never in my life have I heard of a toll road until we recently drove from Utah all over the country to the east coast. (about 3,000 miles. Phew!) I passed through all the toll roads (many reasons, confusion mainly) without paying. So my real questions are, what is an I-pass? Do these tolls apply to me? Are you freaking serious about having to pay a toll just to drive on a road?! These happened in Illinois by the way. In other cases, the new highway will be in an area where only a few people will use, IE to a remote housing development. So, rather than make everyone who lives in the city or state pay for it, they let the people who want the highway built, the people who will use it, pay for it when they use it. Typically, they remove the tolls after the road is paid off. The tolls aren't necessarily for generating revenue outside of paying off that loan.
The I-pass is just a prepaid transponder so that you can get through faster. Rather than stopping at every toll plaza, and paying cash, when you drive it every day, you know how much you spend on tolls per month and you can just load that onto the pass. They usually give you a discounted rate for the tolls as well when you do that. Then they just have wireless signal towers you drive through that scans your account number and automatically debits your charge at that plaza at the discounted rate.
The tolls apply to anyone who drives on the road. And as for what would happen, it honestly depends. E-470 in Colorado recently did away with the toll plazas to reduce fuel consumption and to make people traveling on it easier. So you either had an EZpass (same as I-pass), or they would photo your license plate and mail you a bill every month. Of course the EZ pass was cheaper. It used to be that if you didn't stop at the plazas, not only would you get charged for the tolls you passed, but you would also receive a ticket in the mail for failure to stop at a toll plaza and it was something like a $150 fine. Hopefully that isn't the case on the roads you were on.

They usually give you a discounted rate for the tolls as well when you do that. Then they just have wireless signal towers you drive through that scans your account number and automatically debits your charge at that plaza at the discounted rate.
The tolls apply to anyone who drives on the road. And as for what would happen, it honestly depends. E-470 in Colorado recently did away with the toll plazas to reduce fuel consumption and to make people traveling on it easier. So you either had an EZpass (same as I-pass), or they would photo your license plate and mail you a bill every month. Of course the EZ pass was cheaper. It used to be that if you didn't stop at the plazas, not only would you get charged for the tolls you passed, but you would also receive a ticket in the mail for failure to stop at a toll plaza and it was something like a $150 fine. Hopefully that isn't the case on the roads you were on.
